Choosing Fence Material for My Fence

There are a plethora of different material options available for your fence. Coming in at different price points, its crucial to understand the differences.

Wood fence boards. Is clear material better than knotty?

Wood fences are a natural product meant to complement the look of your home. Wood, by its nature, does tend to split, warp, twist, or can fail in many other ways. But if properly maintained the effects of UV or Humidity or Heat can be reduced. Wood fences are the most common fences in the country, and they can range from being extremely budget driven to cosmetically appealing. That said, any fence board can fail for several reasons. For example, a perfectly clear, knot free piece of Western Red Cedar can have rapid cellular collapse especially if not kiln dried, which most fence boards are not. There is no way for the fabricator to foresee this as they install an otherwise highest end board. Another example is a knot can fall out. Now in this case, a seasoned veteran can identify and avoid knots that are soft or quickly recognize knots that are too large as a percentage of the board width or are in an unsupported location such as the edge where they are more likely to fall off over time.

Wood fences are a naturally beautiful product. The very aspect that there is so much variation within their colors and textures is what creates the natural beauty so many consumers desire. But unlike Vinyl, that can have problems of its own, it is important to recognize that when you install a wood fence you are installing a product that has some tendency to warp, twist, check, or cosmetically fail in some other way. But there is no better value than a wood fence.
