Let's dive into how this process will go

Skipping this step, and accidentally hitting a water line would be disastrous for your experience.
Tools Needed:
-
Shovel/Post Hole Digger
-
Ground stakes & string
-
Fence Genius DIY Level kit
-
Fence Genius iPhone app (need lidar)
-
Spray can for marking locations
-
Screws and Cordless Drill
Laying Out And Marking Post Locations
If you are a DIY looking to install your own fence posts, there are a few things to consider before you get started. But first, call your local Building and Permitting Department for any requirements and or permits they may require. While talking to them, ask how deep your posts need to be to address your Frost Line. Once that conversation is complete and you are moving forward on what they want, call 811 for Utility Marking and have them mark the areas you will be working in. This can take a couple of business days or more.

Note: They may not mark utilities within your property, so you may have to navigate how to confirm utility locations within such as irrigation lines or any other utilities that have been installed in the past. If this is highly concerning to you, perhaps you are not digging any new holes because you plan to pull all the old posts and concrete plugs and reuse those holes but recognize that pulling the concrete will create a slightly larger hole because you will need to remove the soil you made loose pulling the concrete. This is a LOT of work, and there are some tools you can rent to help with this, but it can be a safer option to keep you from digging in fresh dirt. Hardly an even trade, but perhaps safer if utilities are a concern. You might try asking your local building department or 811 for suggestions how to locate any possible utilities on your property but not all utilities on your property can always be located. Previous owners may have run something without a permit.
The next considerations:
-
Have you reached an agreement with your neighboring property owner to build ON the property line? (If that is your plan) If not, how far in on your property are you going to install the fence.
-
If there is a Best Side of the fence, which way will it face? Towards you or towards your neighbors. Plan for this.
-
Of course, the fence material needs to be decided upon, Wood, Vinyl etc, and any maximum lengths of components need to be considered.

Now to start laying out the Post Locations:

-
Start by identifying survey property corners on your property to establish your outer limit boundaries.
-
After verifying your boundaries, begin the next step by marking each corner location that you would like the fence to reach to. Think of this as the perimeter drawing where the fence will be connecting the dots.
-
Now divide the unmarked run segments evenly, taking care not to exceed material lengths. Typically, it is safe to go 96” on center as a max, but IF you have a 14’6” segment, then divide it in half and mark at 7’3”.
-
A good practice while marking your post locations is to be conservative when encountering hips and valleys. Taking care to put your posts at the peaks and at the valleys, and not in between. As it will cause you to have to dig trenches to fit your fence in properly. (Note the picture above)
-
-
If you are interested in utilizing a software tool. to aid your post layout process, consider downloading the Fence Genius iOS app, you have to verify that you have a LiDAR sensor to use the app. It will mark each post location for you in an optimal way through Augmented Reality.
Now you have your post locations, and you are ready to start digging and installing the posts.
Step 2: Measuring Post to Post Locations
Measuring your post to post locations dictates the dimensions of your fence panels. This is critical to getting a perfect fit for your fence panel system. Follow the video tutorial below to obtain accurate measurements
